Links To Information On Developmental Disabilities, Disability Rights, & Issues Which Affect People With Disabilities

This page of Resource Links originally started out as a portion of the Pirmann Family Home Page, a page by and about Greg & Sue Pirmann and their daughter Carrie, of Barto, PA. As the list of links grew, it took on a life of its own, and has now become a page of its own. I [Greg Pirmann] have worked in the developmental disabilities field for nearly 29 years, since graduating from Villanova University in 1969. Suzanne [who is also a 'Nova grad, Class of '70] worked as a Special Education teacher prior to Carrie's birth, so this is obviously an area of great interest to both of us. I presently work in the Pennsylvania Office of Mental Retardation for the Southeast Region, in Philadelphia. I enjoy the work, even on the discouraging days, because it has enabled me to meet hundreds of wonderful people over the years.

The URLs listed below provide connections to a multitude of sites that focus on the many different aspects of the lives of people with disabilities, lives that those of us who do not carry a "disability" label often don't understand or appreciate. They are offered as sources of valuable information for us all. When reviewing them, remember one thing. Those of us who are not "disabled" today may very likely become so at some time in the future, primarily through the process of aging, as steps become a little too steep to handle, and when our eyes or ears start to go. Disabilities don't always come in catastrophic fashion. Remember that the next time you overhear someone complaining about how "stupid" it is to worry about "handicapped accessibility". Someday, most of us are liable to find that those "improvements" aren't just there for the other guy.

SPECIAL NOTE: The Links to mental retardation service providers in Pennsylvania previously included on this page have all been moved to the Web Index of Mental Retardation / Developmental Disability And Other Service Providers In Pennsylvania.

PERSON - CENTERED PLANNING & SUPPORTED LIVING

Most of the articles linked in this section are the work of Michael Smull and his friends. We'd like to thank Allen, Shea & Associates of California for making Michael's important writings available on the Web. Two of the articles listed below are not directly related to the topics of person-centered planning or supported living but they are important nonetheless. Additional (and newer) articles, plus a whole lot more, can be found on the Allen, Shea & Associates web site at General Articles of Interest by Michael Smull and his Friends.
