Here is a collection of photos of the Long Island Railroad
Before the New York City Transit began operating the Rockaway Lines, the LIRR owned it. There was a little used station on the 'flats' called The Raunt. Here a 1948 fan trip makes a photo stop.
The Hempstead station on the Hempstead line in 1969. The lead car looks to be a classic LIRR MP54. In those days the LIRR would mix and match equipment as needed to make service.
This photo at Landia on the Port Jefferson Line was taken during a rainy ERA doubledecker fan trip in 1971. There was a period of time then, that any ERA fan trip caused rain!
The LIRR operated a number of parlor cars on trains to Montauk
and Greenport. This is a photo of the open obs Jamaica at Greenport in 1972 Someone told me that this was car #2038 - Setauket, but here is a closeup of the name. |
This was one of the observation cars from the B&ORR Capital Limited train. The CL operated between Washington DC and Chicago. The LIRR acquired many sleepers and other long distance cars for use as parlors. This photo is a Greenport in 1970.
The Phoebe Snow was the Lackawanna (later Eire-Lackawanna) main train between Hoboken and Chicago. This is one of the PS observation cars on the LIRR on a 1972 fan trip at Oyster Bay.
The LIRR purchased a number of ALCO FA engines to be used for auxilary power and control cabs for push pull service. This was taken on a 1972 fan trip at Cinton Road on the Central Branch.
On the same 1972 fan trip the train is shown with the New York skyline as a backdrop at Dutch Kills.
| LIRR Double Deckers - 1999 | ||
| The LIRR is taking delivery of a new fleet of double
decker cars for dual mode (diesel and electric) one-seat service to Penn
Station. Here awating delivery are some of the cars still in shrink-wrap. These
photos were taken near exit 14A of the NJ Turnpike (yes NJ). The cars are still
on flatbed trucks. How they got there, why they are there, and how they will get to LI are unknown to me. |
